Logging
The post I am doing today is about logging and that means that I have to say if I think that logging should be allowed or not then put two reason why it should or shouldn't.
Sinking New Zealand
Another activity I chose to do was about Islands sinking so I had to write what it is like in 2018 and if I wanted to I could some pictures.
Sir Edmund Hillary
The Activity I did today was one about Sir Edmund Hillary. Sir Edmund Hillary was a mountain climber and I had to write 5 questions that I would ask him if I met Sir Edmund Hillary.

One of the activities we had to do today was about animals and Department of Conservation. The Department of Conservation is a company that learns about animals. What I had to do was write something good about the DOC which is short for Department of Conservation and I also had to write something bad about the DOC. Another thing I had to do was say if I would want to work at the DOC or not.

Moonlight
Today on the Summer Learning Journey site it said to write about our home. We had to think about what is special about our home and then describe our home. It might be quiet then we have to use a more detailed word or write how quiet it is. For example as quiet as a mouse.
Beasts
The activity I chose to do was the Fantastic Beast activity because it looked very interesting and very fun. What I had to do was make up a beast in my head and then use describing words like adjectives to describe my beast.
Seals
The activity I did today was about a seal. What I had to do was watch a video from Summer Learning Journey, then once I had watched it I had to write the success the World Wildlife Fund had and what they are doing to help.
New Zealand Teams
Another thing we had to to was to write three teams in New Zealand that have the word fern in their title. We also had to get images of the team uniforms and we had to write what uniform we would like to wear.
Forests
One of the activities that we had to do from the Summer Learning Journey was to write if we would want to go to see Tane Mahuta tree and why we would want or not want to go there.

Cactus
One of the activities we had today was to work out how much we would give a cactus for a full year if we give it 3 ml of water everyday. This is how I worked out the problem.
Ice Ice Baby
An other activity we had to do was make a copy of a footprint and then we had to explain how to make a positive digital footprint. We also had to write how to be safe online.
Facts About New Zealand
In the holidays years 4 to 8 have to go some activities from the Summer Learning Journey. One of the activities we had to do was read some facts about New Zealand and then we had to make a google drawing with three of the facts that we found most interesting. Here is my three facts that I found interesting.

Discovery of Gold
In Room Five we had to make a diorama about how gold was first discovered in Waiuta. We had to pick a buddy and my buddy was Amelia. Once our diorama were finished we had to make our figures of the four men that found gold in Waiuta. The four people who first found gold in Waiuta were Jimmy Martin, Dave Ross, Ernest Bannan and Bill Meates. Once we had our figures and our dioramas done we could start to take photos for our SMA. Here is Amelia's and my SMA. We hope you like it.

Photos of Waiuta
Room Five went on camp to Waiuta. When we got back from camp the next week we had to make a slide show with the photos that Jo and Mrs Idle took. We also had to put some captions on our slide show. If we wanted to we could put our report on our slide show as well or we could put it on a separate post. I chose to put my report on Waiuta on the same slide show with all of the pictures.

Number Pattern Screencastify
In maths we were learning about number patterns and including making a DLO we also had to screencastify out DLO. Amelia and I screencastified two of our slides and here is our screencastify that we did. We hope you like it.

Number Patterns
In my maths group we were learning about number pattern and we had to make a DLO about them. What we had to do was to choose a pattern from NZCM 6, write the pattern on our slide show and then write to the reader how the pattern works. Amelia and I put on five patterns on our slide show and we also had to screencastify our DLO. Here is our number pattern DLO.

Pet Day Writing
In Awahono School we had a day called Pets Day when we bring out pets. Room five had to write three pieces of writing, one was to persuade, another was to describe and the last was to tell the reader how we look after our pets. We had to copy and paste our writing on to a slideshow, add some photos and then we had to write what we did to be successful in each of our pieces of writing. We didn't have to add photos in our writing but most people did and I added ten photos.

Reading Profile
This term room five had to make a reading profile and we had to make sure we had how we went on our reading goals, a book someone recommended to me, our favourite series, what our goal is for this term, a book we have tried and enjoyed. The last thing we had to include was a book that we have recently enjoyed. Here is my reading profile.

Chair Art
On Thursday the 24 October room five and room six all had Mrs Ealam. We all had to give a new life to some old chairs and we had to pick a theme and my groups theme was nature. We had to make a background for our groups chair that matches our theme then get a magazine and cut out images to go on top of the background. Everyone in room five and six had to cover the front, back and bottom of their chair. On the top of our chair is sky and plants, the bottom of our chair is brown to represent the dirt and on the back we put blue pieces of magazine. After we had all our images and all our colours we glued all of the pieces onto the chair. Once we had stuck all of our pieces on our chair with PVA glue we had to seal it in with Modpodge. If we did it again I think I would change the bird and make them look like they are flying.

Spring Holiday Reading
In the school holidays every year 4 to 8 had to write a sentence from a book that they had read that describes the feeling of one of characters. We had to create a DLO and we had to include the sentence written right so like there no spelling mistakes, the page number, the name of the author and the title written correctly.

Collage
We are learning about the plastic in the ocean so we made a collage based on the plastic that people have thrown away into the ocean. Our collage had to include a beach, some land, sea and sky.
We had to get a magazine and rip out the colours that we needed for a beach, land, sea and sky but before that we had to draw an outline of the land, sea, sky and beach. Then once we had got the colours we needed we could start gluing the colours in the right place on the card. Once we had finished we had to start to make some sea animals that looked real because if we made them look fake, people might think that we were just making it for fun but we were not! We were trying to tell people what is going in the world and what the problem is. After we had drawn the sea animals we were allowed to stick the animals on our background that we made from magazine. After we had stuck the animals on we had to stick pieces of plastic on.
We had found finding the colours for our background and drawing the animals hard because we had to find the real animals because we weren’t allowed to draw animals that weren’t realistic. We found finding the colours for our background hard because there was not much of the colours that we needed.
If we did it again we would try to give it more impact and make our animals more 3 dimensional.

Mixed Numbers and Improper Fractions
In my maths group we have been learning about mixed numbers and improper fractions and if you don't know what they are I will be telling you what they are in my DLO. We had to show other people what improper fractions and mixed numbers are. I put some examples of improper fractions and mixed numbers. on my DLO We had to write a little sentence about what they are. Here is my DLO that I made.
View From Room Five
In my class we had to write about what we can see out from one of our windows. The window that I chose was the one on my left. We had to write an introduction about what we are going to be writing about, then we had to write paragraphs for each object that we saw. Our success criteria was to use present tense, use show don't tell, use adverbs of place, short introduction and conclusion, variety of precise vivid adjectives, verbs and nouns, use a variety of conjunctions to link ideas and organise writing into paragraphs. Here is my writing about what I saw from the window that I chose.
The View from Room 5
Outside room five windows there are lots of wonderful sites to gaze at. I don’t think a lot of other schools have such wonderful views like Awahono School has, everywhere you look you see interesting.
Just outside my window there is a dark brown sandbox that has dry light brown sand in it. The sand is covered by a red piece of cloth and it is there because they are keeping the sand all dry. The cloth is holded there by shiny tall poles that are in the shape of a cylinder. The sandbox is surrounded by lots of short green grass.
There are sheep that have fluffy coats that are as white as milk. They also have lots of green grass to eat and they are in the second paddock next to Mrs Elam's house.
Far away is Mrs Elam’s house which has a light green roof also a whitey yellow coloured bottom. Also Mrs Elam’s house is covered by lots of skinny trees with very light pink leaves on them. Her house is at the back end of the school field that has small little bits of green grass.
From my window I can see some fat, grey and rocky mountains that is at the end of the field and they are mostly covered by clouds that are bumpy and as white as milk. In the distance all rocky grey mountains look like it is on a lean because it doesn’t look like it is very straight compared to top of the smaller mountains.
Plastic Bin Liners
In room five we were learning to write to persuade. We decided to write to our principal about how many plastic bin liners we use a year and we tried to persuade her to ban plastic bin liners in our school. Our class had written a letter to the principal to persuade her to ban the plastic bin liners. We had to have an introduction then our three reasons why we should ban the plastic bin liners. My three good reasons were we only put dry food in them, we use 2000 a year also it will save money not to buy the bin liners so then we can buy other things that we really need. My last reason why we should not use bin liners because it causes pollution when we throw them away. We also had to write a conclusion at the end of our letter. Our success criteria were to write out ideas in paragraphs, to write an introduction, a conclusion, to start each paragraph with a topic sentence and to use words like in my opinion, I believe and I firmly believe. In our writing we had to start the paragraph with firstly, secondly and lastly or thirdly.
10th September 2018
Dear Mrs Wallace,
In 2005 Collingwood was the first town to ban plastic bags. So why don’t we? I firmly believe that Awahono School should not have plastic bags for bin liners. If you don’t agree with me read my three good reasons why we should not use plastic bags as bin liners.
Firstly, we only use the bins in the class for dry things. Like paper, chip wrappers and glad wrap. The bins are made of metal so they don’t need bin liners to put dry food in. If what we put in the bins were wet food, it will go everywhere, but because it is dry, we do not need the bags. I believe that we should not use them for the dry food.
Secondly, we use two thousand bin liners a year. In this school we have been using use two thousand bin liners a year because we use ten a day, fifty a week and five hundred a term. If we don’t use the bin liners for dry food we will be saving money and we can spend them on other things. Like new sports equipment and new kapa haka uniforms.
Lastly, the plastic bags will pollute after they have been thrown away. At the end of the day the cleaners come and take the bin liners then put them into black bags which gets thrown away to the landfill. Then they will pollute and if animals go near there they will be badly harmed or die. Do you want animals to die?
In my opinion I think that we should not use the bin liners for the dry food because they cause pollution and we are just wasting money on something that we don’t need. We will be saving the animals and we will be definitely making a difference. If we don’t get rid of them will just be wasting the money on buying them so we will not be able to buy new things that we will need and we may not need them now but we will need them sooner or later.
Yours sincerely,
Hannah

Using a Double Number Line
In my maths group we have been learning to use a double number line to show our working out to a fraction of a set problems. We had to make a DLO about our learning to use a double number line and Mrs Idle gave use three fractions of a set problems that we had to show the answer to using a double number line. I made up seven more of my own fractions of a set problems and you will see the equations in my DLO and the answers. I find it really easy to work out the answers and I think that is is easy to understand what we need to do.

El Gregoe
On Tuesday the 4 of September a magician called El Gregoe came to Awahono School and he talked to us about how to deal with bullies. El Gregoe showed us a couple of magic tricks with his assistant Ben and then he talked to us about the five things to do if you are being bullied.
Then El Gregoe read us a poem, when he was finished he said to the whole school to respect other people and next he read us a story about a kid who brought his new ball to school but another kid came and took his ball and in the end Ernie got his ball back. El Gregoe said that we should only use our hands for helping. So El Gregoe put the word helpful on the ladder that he pulled out of is suitcase along with respect.
Next he did an other magic trick and another thing that El Gregoe did was choose a person which was Ben to come up the font and he Ben had to put on a mask and a wig then he sung a song about responsible then Ben got to choose from a balloon or 100 dollars. Once he was done singing and he had chosen what he wanted ,El Gregoe put responsible on the ladder and he also put caring and trustworthy on the ladder a little bit later. But before he put the word on the ladder Chedza came up and waved a small magic wand to try and make a bird appear but it didn't work and we had to keep giving her bigger and bigger wands to make the bird appear. Then El Gregoe talked to us about one of his birds

Shapes on a Screencastify
In room five we have been learning about 2 D shapes and we learnt what a trapezium was and lots of other shapes. Last week we were told to make a screencastify in buddies and the next week Annabelle and I were buddies.Annabelle and I will tell you about 5 other shapes in our screencastify.
Describing Writing
In class we have been learning about how to describe in our writing and we had to include precise nouns, adjectives and we had to extend our sentences so that they are not like the man was walking into the shop. We also had to made shore that we are using present tense so it's like what is happening right now not what has happened.
As I stroll into the shop I see a young lady sleeping on the scarlet red counter lying opposite the other lady that looks as board as a bee with no flower to pollinate. The ladies slouching in the chair look like they just want to leave, go home, lie in their beds and close up for the day.
I am in the shop and I feel as if a am drowning in a colourful plastic ocean. From top to bottom the shelves are packed with fluorescent coloured toys but the planes and cars are dull white and there are some black and brown plastic toy guns that are at the back of the shop hanging from a wall. The lady types and makes an annoying clicking noise on her grey computer as I am gazing at the toys so that I can pick out the toy that I like. When I look around it is very hard to pick out a toy because there are so many different types of toys to choose from.I feel frustrated because I can’t pick just one toy out of at least one thousand.
I feel annoyed about plastic and sad for the animals because plastic kills all the animals in the sea and we are destroying their homes. I wish that plastic didn’t exist in the world so that all the animals in the sea would be still alive but because of us nearly all the animals are dead.

The Plastic Mountain
In room five we have been learning to describe a moment in time. We wrote about this picture. We had to imagine that we are one of the kids working there. Our success criteria were to write in present tense, extend our sentences by adding more detail and use our senses, sights, sound, feeling and sensations.
As I gaze around I spot a mountain made of a variety of different coloured plastic bottles and right under the brown dusty bridge are big black sacks that are also filled to the brim with lots of coloured plastic bottles. When I walk around the sound of cracking invades my ears. There are woven dark brown and light green baskets to separate the transparent bottles from the light green ones. A silver car zooms by and the smell of exhaust fume floods my nose and it is disgusting.
There is a lady sitting down in the corner with a silver knife to take off the labels on the transparent bottles and green ones. A young girl is walking through the plastic bottles in her dirty top and pants. The young boy in front of the black sacks is taking off the plastic bottle labels.
There is a lot of noise coming from the back of the big black bags from people walking around the shops and talking. Will it ever stop? I ask myself. The people are being too noisy. That noise is distracting the other people who are working hard to get money. They look like they are panicking because all that noise is distracting them so they think they won't get all the labels off the bottles to get money.

Jenny Sommmervell
On Tuesday the 28th of August an author named Jenny Sommervell came to our school. Jenny Sommervell told us that it takes a lot of work to write a story, first you have to think of what your story is going to be about, then you need to do little bits at a time like first the title of the book, then the introduction, then you can do the start of the story next the middle of it and the end. She showed us a life cycle of an eel, they start as eggs then they are called larva, next in the life cycle is the glass eel then it is the elver, last it is the adult eel. Some of the books that she has written are The Day Dad Blew Up The Cowshed and The Eel Hunt , they are all great books.

Symmmetry
In room five for maths we had to fold a square piece of paper and then we had to draw straight lines with a ruler on the coloured paper from the fold. We had to make shapes that had three sides, shapes that had four sides and shapes that had more than four sides. Then we put all the shapes on a a black piece of paper and on each piece of paper there was a different type of shape. The symmetry line splits the shape into two parts and the two parts have to be equal. The symmetry line is in the middle and it is there because the symmetry line was where we folded the paper. For me Bella,Annabelle and Amelia the threes were the hardest to make and the fours were the easiest to make.

Sid Writing
In class we decided to write about a cat that comes to our school called Sid because we are learning to describe, write in present tense and use linking words. Here is my writing.
Who is Sid? Sid is a black and white cat that comes to our school and visits us. He got his name from a book called Six Dinner Sid and also because we think he has more than one person looking after him.
Sid has a smudge of black on his nose, a big black patch on his back and the rest of him is white. His eyes are dark green and there is a thin black line in his eyes which is his pupil.
Sid likes to jump up on the tables, climb trees and go under the platform in the playground. He also likes to eat his food, he likes to be patted by people under the chin and Sid likes to be cuddled.
Sid comes to your school and begs for food from the teachers. All through the day Sid keeps hanging around his food bowl which is outside the office and Mrs Whitmore makes sure that Sid’s bowl is full with cat biscuits.
I think Sid is a greedy and kind cat that walks around the school.

Cross Country
I am starting to slow down and now I am picking up the pace. As I go past people are cheering in the crowd, people are playing before their race and I see green and blue t shirts along the white fence. My legs are racing then they are suddenly hurting and I’m slowing down right before a hill. My heart is racing and my legs are aching. Before we start to race I am very nervous because it is my first cross country race. Suddenly a lady started to say the years 4 girls are about to race. As I am going past I see lots of road marks to show where we need to go. Just before I was half way through the track I saw people finishing the race. Next year I want to get 6th place because I came last place this year.
